Small Spaces: Container Residence By Poteet Architects

Renowned for their outstanding capacity to fuse sustainability with modern day design and style, Poteet Architects of San Antonio, Texas designed a 1-of-a-sort dream house for an artist/entrepreneur client: a 320 square-foot guest property produced completely from a reclaimed container. This innovative, stand-alone dwelling sits on the exact same property as the major residence (a former warehouse on an industrial lot) situated just south of the downtown region.

Featured in its original blue hue, the temperature-controlled container measures 8 x 40 feet and due to the resourceful work of a welder, plentiful natural light pours in the windowed-walls on two of the 4 sides of this elongated cube. This garnering of warm sunlight is equally offset by a rooftop-garden. The greenery receives irrigation from an installed greywater tank pumped from the shower and sink to cool the house, although the raised, steel-frame of this structure permits for air-flow. In addition to this keen style, spray foam insulation additional assists in harnessing maximal power efficiency no matter the season.

The modern interior boasts minimalist design and style which functions nicely in this little studio: bamboo ply boards transform into linear walls and flooring, although cheery hits of red and blue fill this mod living space. Neighborhood artists’ works improve the walls just above the multi-functional lounging sofa, although an oversized red “X” salvaged from an old Texaco station sign brings whimsy to the area.
